2014 Nov 21

Jake Hutcherson, of Evergreen, CO, was selected to be a member of the Zero Waste Initiatives Team at Fort Lewis College's Environmental Center. Hutcherson's major is Biology - Environmental and Organismic option .

The Environmental Center’s Zero Waste team seeks to increase the adoption of zero-waste principles at Fort Lewis College. The team is responsible for educating students on how to recycle properly on campus. The team also runs a free store which collects donations of used goods and provides them to the community at no-cost. In addition, the team helps run operations for the Student Union Rocket Composter and for select campus recycling programs. The Rocket Composter is a state of the art in-vessel composter that captures 25% of the food waste produced by Fort Lewis’ dining services. Students on this team also manage the campus printer cartridge recycling program which recycles over 250 printer cartridges every year.

Founded in 1991, the Fort Lewis College Environmental Center (EC) is a campus organization committed to working for environmental sustainability and social justice both at Fort Lewis College and in the Durango community. As part of its student-driven mission, the EC works to connect students to opportunities to create real change. Each year, the EC selects student leaders through a competitive application process. Selected students work on small teams in a non-profit like setting to address the most critical environmental and social issues facing our world. Through their work, the EC students are creating change today while also gaining skills and experience vital to becoming tomorrow's civic leaders.
