Melissa Hicinbothem presented work at California honors conference

Melissa Hicinbothem, of Rockaway, NJ, honors student in the John F. Reed Honors Program, presented her work "The Man in the Black Leather Coat: Panopticism and Historical Fiction" at the 2016 Western Regional Honors Council Conference in Riverside, California April 8-10. Hicinbothem's major is History.

The conference theme was "Diversifying Honors: Innovation, Contribution, & Global Citizenship. Hicinbothem's presentation involved a panoptic analysis of Tom Rob Smith's Child 44 Trilogy and David Benioff's City of Thieves proved the existence of surveillance themes. Her presentation examined the relevance of panoptic analysis to historical fiction and the Soviet Union, as well as generated an understanding of how history is understood.
