Local students graduate from Fort Lewis College
Nearly 200 Skyhawks graduated from Fort Lewis College in a virtual commencement on December 4, 2020. The ceremony premiered online, featuring videos of graduates moving their tassels as their names were read by faculty from their departments. Each speaker lauded students for their accomplishments and intellectual growth during their time at FLC, especially this fall under unique circumstances as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. President Tom Stritikus and Provost Cheryl Nixon shared remarks, and Dugald Owen, professor of Philosophy and Alice Admire Outstanding Teacher Award recipient, gave the commencement address. Graduates in the 2020 Virtual Winter Commencement ceremony received Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, and Master of Arts in Education degrees, as well as certificates in Pre-Health, Geographic Information System, and Digital Marketing.

More than 450 Skyhawks graduated from Fort Lewis College in a virtual commencement on Friday, May 29, 2020. Erik Weihenmayer, adventurer and author, gave the commencement address. The ceremony premiered online, featuring videos of graduates moving their tassels as their names were read by faculty from their departments. From every department, students were lauded for their resilience and courage, many faculty expressing how proud they were of their students' accomplishments. Graduates received Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, and Master of Arts in Education degrees, as well as certificates in Pre-Health, Geographic Information System, and Digital Marketing.

The Fort Lewis College School of Arts & Sciences held its annual Undergraduate Research & Creative Activities Symposium virtually on Thursday, April 23, 2020. Student participants were selected by their departments to represent the best undergraduate research and performances done at Fort Lewis College this year, either in oral or poster presentations.

Local students attend National Science Foundation workshop
Local students attended a National Science Foundation workshop for careers in the Biodiversity Sciences, held in Albuquerque, New Mexico, on November 9 & 10, 2019. The two-day workshop, held at The New Mexico Museum of Natural History and Science in Albuquerque, allowed students from across the Southwest to shadow museum professionals from the Natural History Museum and the Museum of Southwestern Biology on the campus of the University of New Mexico, learn about educational and internship opportunities in biodiversity science, the requirements for graduate school admission in areas of study including botany, zoology, and wildlife management, and meet with professionals working in the field of biodiversity including museum curators, academics, and agency professionals from the Bureau of Land Management, US Forest Service, and the US Fish and Wildlife Service.

Local student selected for presentation at National Conferences on Undergraduate Research 2020
A local student has been selected for presentation at the 2020 National Conferences on Undergraduate Research, to be held at Montana State University in Bozeman, Montana, from March 26-28, 2020. National Conferences on Undergraduate Research have been the premier national conferences devoted exclusively to undergraduate student research and creativity in all disciplines for 34 years.

Gabriella James selected as a RADM Helena O. Mishoe Fellow. The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute has established the Helena Mishoe Fellowship for Underrepresented Scientists that offers opportunities for underrepresented post baccalaureate individuals to receive training in basic, translational, and clinical research. This is a two-year paid position with a mentor at the National Institutes of Health.

Local students win local Go Code Colorado competition
Local graphic design students were one of ten teams in the state to advance to the final round of Go Code Colorado, winning $2,500 at the local level. The FLC Design team will match wits with other teams in Denver on June 7, with three $15,000 awards at stake.

Local students worked on Village Aid Project in Myanmar
Local students, community members, and faculty participated in a Village Aid Project in Myanmar in May 2018. The team implemented a new water system in the village of Than Taung (population ~ 260) in the Shan State of Myanmar, conducted monitoring and evaluation in 5 Myanmar communities where water systems were implemented in prior years, and assessed new communities for water implementation projects in the summer of 2019. The team lived and worked with villagers in their community for 15 days constructing the water system and communal taps.

Founded in 1991, the Fort Lewis College Environmental Center (EC) is a campus organization committed to working for environmental sustainability and social justice both at Fort Lewis College and in the Durango community. As part of its student-driven mission, the EC works to connect students to opportunities to create real change. Each year, the EC selects student leaders through a competitive application process.

Local students placed second in First Nations Launch competition
FLC students travelled to Carthage College in Wisconsin to participate in the American Indian Science & Engineering Society (AISES) division of the First Nations Launch competition. Team Skyhawks tied for second place (out of nine AISES teams) in the oral presentations and performed extremely well in the pre-launch timed event. This competition, sponsored by NASA's Wisconsin Space Grant Consortium (WSGC), is an opportunity for students attending a Tribal College or University, or who are members of a campus AISES chapter, to design, build, and fly a rocket to be launched at the Richard Bong State Recreational Area in Kansasville, WI.

Local students named 2018 Gen-I Career Success Fellows
Local students were named as 2018 Gen-I Career Success Fellows by The Center for Native American Youth (CNAY). These Indigenous leaders will join CNAY and the Native American Finance Officers Association (NAFOA) in New Orleans for networking, leadership development, and career opportunities at the 36th Annual NAFOA Conference in April 2018. Prior to the start of the conference, they'll participate in a one-day, pre-conference leader summit designed specifically for Native youth interested in finance, business and economic development in Indian Country.
